BEYOND THE ORDINARY

2020 | Pencil, paper, digital manipulation | 80cm x 60cm

Beyond the Ordinary presents a figure caught between routine and escape. The artwork depicts a woman dressed as if leaving a 9–5 office job, holding a shopping bag in one hand and an umbrella in the other as she shelters herself from the rain. While her clothing suggests an urban environment, she is instead placed within a lush, green rainforest, creating a sense of visual and emotional displacement.

Her face is obscured by the umbrella, shifting focus to her body language. Her posture suggests fatigue and emotional weariness, reinforced by muted, unassuming clothing that allows her to blend into the background. In contrast, a vivid royal blue raincoat introduces a subtle tension within the composition, hinting at a desire for visibility, confidence, and self-expression.

Set against the unexpected rainforest landscape, the figure appears out of place, reinforcing themes of routine, anonymity, and longing for change. The work reflects the quiet tension between conformity and individuality, and the pull toward a life that exists beyond the familiar.
