UNDERWATER SERIES
2020 | Pigment on unprimed cotton fabric, cotton thread, sequins, beads | 40cm x 40cm
Underwater Series is an abstract embroidered body of work that explores movement, depth, and texture through hand-painted fabric and hand-stitched embroidery. Drawing inspiration from underwater environments, the series focuses on shifting forms, layered surfaces, and the quiet reminder of how light and colour behave beneath the surface.
Each piece begins with hand-painted fabric, allowing pigment to move organically across the cloth. Embroidery and beading are then layered over the surface, building areas of density and contrast through stitch, texture, and repetition. Sequins and beads are used sparingly to introduce subtle reflection, referencing light filtering through water and the slow movement found in submerged landscapes.
The circular format reinforces the sense of contained environments or cropped viewpoints, encouraging close inspection of material and detail. Rather than depicting specific underwater scenes, the series abstracts these influences, prioritising process, material exploration, and tactile engagement. Together, the works reflect an interest in surface design, slow making, and the translation of natural environments into textile form.
